A former student of Markstein, who is now Assistant Concertmaster of the Virginia Symphony, writes, "I have nothing but wonderful memories of Mr. Markstein's encouragement, hands-on approach, and excellent illustrative teaching style. His profound pedagogical pedigree combined with enthusiasm and energy are characteristics not often found in combination. I am absolutely certain that without Mr. Markstein's steadfast tutelage, I would not have become a professional violinist."

Of his teaching, Markstein writes, "In my teaching, I consider it imperative to provide value (improvement) to all students, no matter what their level of proficiency. I emphasize intonation, rhythmic integrity, and tone production before delving into interpretation and stylistic matters."
