How to Apply to Graduate
Students who plan to meet all graduation requirements for a degree or certificate program must apply to graduate and pay the Graduation Application fee to participate in the commencement ceremony and receive a diploma.
To receive your Eastern Florida State College diploma, you must apply for graduation, whether or not you plan to attend a commencement ceremony. Applying online is the easiest, fastest option following the steps below.
NOTE: Applying to graduate does not reserve an applicant's seat or guest tickets for a commencement ceremony. Commencement ticketing information is posted in your myEFSC portal after submitting an application.
Be sure to review the dates and deadlines in the tabbed box below as the online application opens and closes for each term on a certain date. A PDF form must be used after the online system has closed. There is a deadline to apply each term to avoid an additional $20 late fee per application. After the late fee deadline, there is no guarantee your name will appear in the Commencement Booklet.
Graduation vs. Commencement: What is the difference?
Graduation means you have completed all the requirements to earn a degree or certificate. This includes earning the required number of credits, completing the necessary courses for your major, and fulfilling any other program-specific requirements. Degrees and certificates are officially awarded at the end of each term upon successful completion of your program of study.
Commencement on the other hand, is the ceremonial event that celebrates students who are graduating. It is a formal recognition of academic achievement. However, participation in the commencement ceremony is not required to graduate. Likewise, participating in the ceremony does not guarantee that all graduation requirements have been met.
To participate in the commencement ceremony, walk across the stage, and have your name included in the commencement booklet, students must apply to graduate.
Students who meet all graduation requirements, but do not apply may be automatically graduated (auto-graduated). However, auto-graduated students will not participate in commencement activities unless they apply to graduate by the deadline and pay the required graduation fee.
