ChatGPT and Other Artificial-Intelligence (AI)-based Tools

As technology continues to evolve, the academic landscape is transforming. One such advancement is ChatGPT, a powerful language tool developed by OpenAI that uses artificial intelligence to generate text. While ChatGPT offers numerous benefits for research and education, it's crucial to cultivate a culture of academic integrity to ensure the responsible use of this technology.

At Eastern Florida State College, we aim to reinforce those academic integrity standards and offer faculty the following recommendations related to the use of ChatGPT in the classroom:

Establish Clear Guidelines for Students

Develop and enforce clear policies on the use of AI tools like ChatGPT in academic work. These class policies should clarify the acceptable and unacceptable uses of AI, outline penalties for violations, and provide guidance for using AI to support rather than replace original work.

Encourage Collaboration

Foster a collaborative learning environment where students can share experiences using AI tools ethically. Encourage open discussions on the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, promoting a shared understanding of its impact on education.

Support Originality and Critical Thinking

Emphasize the importance of originality and critical thinking in academic work. Provide resources and support for students to develop these skills, helping them understand the value of their unique perspectives and ideas.

Implement Plagiarism Detection Tools

Utilize plagiarism detection tools to identify and deter instances of academic dishonesty. These tools can help flag potential misuse of AI-generated content, ensuring that academic integrity is maintained. The tool Turnitin offers AI writing detection.

Create a Culture of Intrinsic Learning

This fosters an environment that encourages students' natural curiosity, interests, and passions. Design learning experiences that tap into students' internal motivation, while also providing the necessary support, guidance, and resources. Intrinsic learning empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey, promotes curiosity and engagement, and fosters a lifelong love for learning.
