Taking the CJBAT

The Public Safety Institute at Eastern Florida State College partners with the Brevard Police Testing & Selection Center (BPTC) to select students for the law enforcement and corrections academies. The BPTC performs all screening and testing verification.

Academy applicants must first take the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT), a requirement of the State of Florida to enter any law enforcement academy, unless they are exempt because they hold a two-year degree or higher or are an honorably-discharged veteran. (Proof is required to qualify for a CJBAT exemption).

Pearson Vue testing centers administer the CJBAT in accordance with Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) requirements. The Pearson VUE Test Center, Sarno Business Complex, located at 2176 Sarno Rd, Suite 109 in Melbourne, is the Brevard County location that offers the CJBAT at a cost of $39.

To register to take the CJBAT, visit Pearson VUE's Florida Department of Law Enforcement web section. Once there you will find additional details about the test and should click the "Create Account" button and complete the required information.

After creating your account you will be directed to "Schedule this Exam" and will have the opportunity to choose the Melbourne location. A calendar will provide available test dates and after choosing one, you will follow the check out and payment steps and receive confirmation emails with the steps to take the test.

The Melbourne Pearson VUE test location phone number is 321-237-0032.

The CJBAT, developed by Industrial/Organizational Solutions (IOS), Inc., measures the defined minimum competencies in three separately-timed sections as follows: Section I - behavioral attributes; Section II - memorization; and Section III – written comprehension, written expression, deductive reasoning, and inductive reasoning. In total, there are 97 questions on the CJBAT, with 1½ hours (90 minutes) allowed to complete the exam.
