Medical Coder/Biller Application & Selection Process

The Medical Coder/Biller program is a limited-access program that begins every Fall. The annual application deadline is May 15th. Please Note: If that deadline has passed, contact a health sciences advisor to see if seats may be available for a late application.

In order to apply, first review the Selection Criteria below. The Selection Committee is guided by a point system to select students once a year for acceptance into the program's core courses; however, the final decision will be the responsibility of the Selection Committee.

Be sure to complete all steps in the Medical Coder/Biller Application Process, referring back to the Selection Criteria as needed as you prepare your application materials.

Selection Criteria

The applicant is responsible for providing the documentation necessary to support the point system, prior to the annual May 15th application deadline.

Completion of Prerequisite Support Courses

Applicants must have previously completed or be enrolled in the following classes at the time of the application deadline. Completed courses must have a grade of "C" or better:

*NOTE: HSC 1531 - Medical Terminology - is not acceptable for the Medical Coder Biller ATD.

Grade Point Average

Applicants must have at least a 2.0 GPA, and at least 12 college credit hours, in order to apply to the program. All applicants will be ranked, highest to lowest, according to cumulative GPA.  

Healthcare Experience/ Education

The Selection Committee reserves the right to give special consideration for applicants who have experience in the healthcare field. This experience could be in the form of graduating from a Health-related program and/or having at least one year of work experience in a healthcare setting.

To provide verification of work experience, please use the Work Experience form for documentation of position and dates worked in the healthcare setting and reference from a supervisor. Work experience is calculated based on the start of employment/volunteering. Any healthcare programs not evident on transcripts should be supported by providing a copy of the completion certificate or other documentation. The Work Experience form must be completed entirely and turned in by the application deadline.

To provide verification of completion of a health-related program, please submit an unofficial transcript from the institution and/or diploma/certification earned from institution.

Essay

Submit a one-page, typed essay on the topic, “Why are you choosing to enter the Health Information profession as a Medical Coder/Biller?”

Point System (if applicable)

In the event of numerous applicants with competitive GPAs, the following point system will be used to select the accepted students: 

Each course is worth a maximum of 5 points. There is a total of 25 possible points. An "A" is worth 5 points. A "B" is worth 3 points. A "C" is worth 1 point.

How to Apply to the Medical Coder/Biller Program

All students must be current EFSC students and must complete a Medical Coder/Biller Program application.

Verify EFSC General Admissions Status

All Medical Coder/Biller applicants must be current EFSC students in order to apply to the program. If you are not already a current EFSC student or if you have not attended in over a year, complete the application for admission to Eastern Florida State College prior to program application deadline.

For new EFSC applicants, there is a $30 non-refundable application fee for admission that must be submitted at the time of application to the college. 

All general admissions requirements must be completed prior to applying to the Medical Coder/Biller program, including official high school and/or college transcripts, orientation, residency, etc.

Complete Required Courses

The five support courses outlined in the Selection Criteria must be completed prior to enrollment into core courses (HIMC) with a grade of "C" or better. Discuss this during your advising appointment.

Complete Online Medical Coder/Biller Application

Complete the online Application for the Medical Coder/Biller Program or visit the Health Sciences Admissions Office for assistance. The application deadline is May 15th. The application must be submitted online. If the deadline has passed, contact a health sciences advisor to inquire about a late application if space is available.

There is a $25 non-refundable fee for this application. This fee must be paid online or to the Student Accounts Business Office at your local EFSC campus, before the application deadline.

Submit Application Materials

Submit all application materials electronically to the Health Sciences Admissions office on the Cocoa Campus, Building 11, Room 228 or via email to healthscience@easternflorida.edu by May 15.

  • An UNOFFICIAL copy of each and every college transcript is required. Unofficial EFSC transcripts can be accessed from myGPS or at www.floridashines.org.
  • Work Experience Form (if applicable)
  • A typed, one-page essay that addresses the following topic:  “Why are you choosing to enter the Health Information profession as a Medical Coder/Biller?”
