Instruction and Information Literacy

EFSC librarians help you learn how to effectively find, retrieve and evaluate information. We do that through many resources, including the online Basic Information Literacy Tutorial, known as BILT; classroom instruction in coordination with EFSC instructors; and by offering students specialized Library and Information Services courses.

Basic Information Literacy Tutorial: BILT

BILT is a set of eight web-based modules designed to be self paced. These modules will help familiarize you with the research process and introduce you to some of the online resources available at EFSC.

Library Instruction

As a part of their core requirements, all EFSC students must complete ENC 1101 and SPC 2608 which include research papers, essays, or presentations. Librarians show students how to recognize relevance, validity, and currency of information, including how to cite sources and synthesize their research into an essay, paper, or presentation.

EFSC Instructors can schedule a library instruction session for their course by contacting their campus library. Topics include:

  • Introductory library tours
  • Orientations to library research tailored to specific course needs
  • Guidance in strategies for Internet searching and evaluation
  • Hands-on practice in how to use databases and Internet resources

Research Courses

Eastern Florida State College library instructors offer two college credit courses, introducing students to fundamental computer and information literacy skills.

  • LIS 1023 Information Technology Literacy
A two-credit computer literacy and research skills course.

  • LIS 2004 Introduction to Internet Research
A one-credit online Internet research course.

Topics include basic computer concepts, electronic communications, common user applications, effective search strategies, locating and using information in print and on the Internet, critical evaluation of information, and citation and copyright issues. Visit the EFSC Class Schedule and check course availability using the LIS prefix from the course drop down list.
