Work-Based Learning Opportunities

Want to gain experience while you're earning your degree?

EFSC offers several ways to work, learn, and build your résumé while you're enrolled. Depending on your program, financial aid eligibility, and career goals, you may be able to participate in an internship, work-study position (on or off campus), or apprenticeship.

Which work-based learning opportunity is right for me?

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are paid opportunities that do not require financial aid eligibility, but do require a specific academic program course. Students do not earn college credit.

Learn the job by doing the job. EFSC apprenticeships provide paid, hands-on experience with carefully selected community employers whose work aligns with specific academic programs. Unlike an internship or Work-Study position, apprentices are selected through a formal application and interview process and are expected to take on meaningful job responsibilities as they develop the skills needed for the profession. Participation is not guaranteed, and students must be selected by the employer. Opportunities are offered on a semester-to-semester basis and are available only through participating academic programs and employers.

Launches in Summer 2027 – applications will open in Spring 2027!

Internships

Internships not not commonly paid, do not require financial aid eligibility, do require an academic program course, and earn college credit.

Gain hands-on experience in your field of study while earning college credit. Internships are available to students in eligible degree or certificate programs and are designed to connect what you learn in the classroom with practical experience in a professional setting. Internship requirements, including hours and eligibility, vary by program. Internships may be paid or unpaid, although most EFSC internship experiences are unpaid.

Off-Campus Work-Study

Off-Campus Work-Study experiences are paid opportunities that require financial aid eligibility, but do not require an academic program course and do not earn college credit.

Earn a paycheck while gaining work experience on an EFSC campus. Federal Work-Study provides part-time employment for students who demonstrate financial need and meet other eligibility requirements. Positions are available in a variety of EFSC departments and are designed to work around your class schedule. Students apply and interview for available positions, and those who are selected are paid an hourly wage.

On-Campus Work-Study

On-Campus Work-Study experiences are paid opportunities that require financial aid eligibility, but do not require an academic program course and do not earn college credit.

Earn a paycheck while gaining work experience in your community. Off-campus Federal Work-Study allows eligible students to work part-time with approved community organizations while earning an hourly wage. Like on-campus Work-Study, students must meet financial-aid eligibility requirements, apply for available positions, and be selected by the employer or organization. Opportunities and availability vary by term.
