Accepted Radiography Student Requirements
All accepted students will be required to have a certificate for AIDS 500 prior to entrance into the clinical portion of the program. This certificate can be obtained from the Health Sciences Institute at 321-433-7745.
All accepted students will be required to have a current American Heart Association course "BLS for Health Care Providers" CPR certification prior to entrance into the clinical portion of the program. Students must complete a two-part sequence to earn a CPR certification by the American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support).
- Visit the AHS eLearning site and under the "find a course" option, select BLS, Basic Life Support. Select the HeartCode BLS option and add it to your cart ($). Complete the online portion and print out your certificate.
- Schedule a skills check. This can be completed by calling the AHA Coordinator at 321-433-7563, Melbourne campus, Building 15, Room 223.
The Eastern Florida State College Radiography Program requires the same immunizations that the State of Florida requires for high school students:
DTaP
IPV
MMR
Hepatitis B series
Varicella
Flu shot

Students will be performing clinical education in hospitals and clinics throughout the county. Students are responsible for transportation to and from their assigned clinical education sites.
A criminal History Information Request through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement must be processed on each accepted student. For more information, see the Florida State Statutes on the Florida Legislature web page as well as on the State of Florida employment web page.
After acceptance to the Radiography program, students should possess the following.
Communication Ability
The ability to communicate clearly and effectively (verbal and written) with patients, family members, and all others of the health care team using the English Language.
Visual Acuity
Possess sufficient visual acuity to read departmental protocols, exam orders in patient records, evaluate patient monitoring devices in areas of low and high light. The ability to see fine lines and to distinguish gradual changes in blacks, grays and whites in order to properly evaluate radiographs.
Hearing Ability
Possess sufficient auditory perception to be aware of warning techniques such as low-sounding equipment buzzers, fire alarms, overhead pages, patient monitoring devices, phones ringing, etc. The ability to communicate with patients when background noise may be high; be able to hear faint or muffled sounds from a distance.
Motor Skills, Strength, and Mobility
Use sufficient fine motor skills to grasp small objects required to perform imaging and patient care procedures such as properly filling syringes, don sterile gloves and manipulating locks on radiographic equipment. Be able to lift objects from the ground (more than 25 pounds). Operate both mobile and stationary medical imaging equipment. Provide strength to move and operate equipment and patient carts and wheelchairs. Stand unassisted for long periods of time. Provide strength to transfer and position patient without placing patient at risk.
Social Skills
Possess mature, emotional behaviors to ensure safety while caring for patients. Respond appropriately to constructive criticism as related to professional performance. Remain mentally and physically alert while performing clinical duties.
All accepted students in the Radiography program are required to purchase the Allied Health Liability Insurance and also the Education/Training Student Accident Insurance through EFSC. This will be automatically added to the lab fees of one of your courses and this insurance is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.
