Course Materials Affordability Initiative

Titan First Day Ready is Eastern Florida State College's course material delivery program in partnership with the EFSC Bookstores, powered by Barnes and Noble College. First Day Ready ensures students have their required materials before the first day of class, at an estimated cost savings of 35–50% for the cost of course materials each term as compared to buying items directly for every class.

Through the program, physical books are conveniently packaged and provided to students on a rental basis, with easy pickup at a campus bookstore or shipment to the student's home. Digital materials are delivered directly through the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

Required course materials for credit-hour courses will be applied to the Student Account as a course material charge of $25 per credit hour each semester, unless a program is not participating in Titan First Day Ready, such as clock-hour workforce programs, or the student opts out by the deadline.

Titan First Day Ready Program Basic FAQs

What is the Titan First Day Ready program?

Titan First Day Ready is a course material model that lowers the cost of materials for students in EFSC credit-hour courses and ensures students have access to all their required course materials on or before the first day of class.

Through this new program, physical books will be conveniently packaged and provided to students on a rental basis, and digital materials will be delivered directly within the Canvas LMS.

Costs will be assessed at $25.00 per credit hour for all courses registered in the term. At the end of the term, students will receive email reminders to return their physical course materials to the bookstore.

How does it work?
  • Register for your classes and the bookstore will start preparing your course materials.
  • One month before classes start, you will receive a verification email sent to your Titan Student email instructing you to select your delivery preference (in-store pickup or shipped directly to you). This email will also list the available format(s) for materials required for your class, such as digital or hard copy book.
  • An email notification will be sent to your Titan Student Email account when your order is ready for pickup or when it ships.
  • Your digital materials will be delivered for your course(s) within the Canvas LMS.
What is included in the program?

The program provides all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes, and digital materials to eligible students.

When a student receives the selection email one month before the start of the course, the email will verify their course schedule and list if the material is a physical item or digital item delivered through the Canvas LMS.

What is excluded from the program?

The program does not include consumables that cannot be returned and reused such as lab goggles, dissection kits, molecular model kits, engineering kits, or nursing kits.

How do I enroll in the program?

All eligible students will be automatically enrolled in the Titan First Day Ready program.

Which courses and programs are included in the program?

Courses that earn what are known as credit hours at EFSC are part of Titan First Day Ready, including courses taken by dual enrolled students. Regardless of course material selection, all courses at EFSC with an associated credit hour status will be assessed the $25 per credit hour charge. That charge will not be the responsibility of the dual enrollment student, with the exception of Early College Credit Option (ECCO) course materials.

Currently, NOT included in Titan First Day Ready are: courses for programs that earn a Career and Technical Certificate (CTC), also known as clock-hour workforce programs, continuing education, and non-credit based programs. These three categories are excluded from the program.

What if I am a dual enrolled student?

All dual enrolled public, private, and home education students will be automatically enrolled in the Titan First Day Ready program. The charge of $25 per credit hour for required course materials will not be the responsibility of the dual enrollment student with the exception of Early College Credit Option (ECCO) course materials

Ordering and Payment

What is the cost of Titan First Day Ready?

The Titan First Day Ready program will cost $25 per credit hour for academic year 2023-2024.

As an example, course materials for students taking 15 credits per semester would cost $375 per semester. Students can expect to save between 35% to 50% each term based on their course selection.

How will I be charged?

When fees are assessed for a term's registered courses, the charges will be listed on your Student Account as Titan First Day Ready.

If I opt out after my first bill is due and/or a payment is made, how will my account be adjusted?

You will make the payment according to the balance due as of the payment deadline.

If a student opts out, a credit will be applied to your account.

How do I purchase my course materials if I decide to opt-out of the program?

Students who opt out will be responsible for purchasing their required course materials through the Campus Bookstore.

Students can find information about their required course materials on the Bookstore website.

What happens if I never verify my order?

Students will receive emails and phone calls from the bookstore to remind them to verify their order. If the student does not opt-out, rental materials will be held at the bookstore, digital materials will be accessible within the Canvas LMS, and the student's account will be charged.

If I never pick up my books, will I still get charged?

Yes, if the student does not opt-out, their materials will be held at the bookstore and their student account will be charged.

Will I be charged if I withdraw from a class after the last day of Add/Drop for each part of term?

Yes, if you withdraw from a course after the part of term's Add/Drop deadline, you will be charged for the materials associated with that course. If you drop the course prior to the deadline, you will receive a credit for the materials associated with that course.

In the event that you add another course during the Add/Drop period, or if you add a course for a course in a later shorter term, such as a minimester, you will be charged for all newly registered credit hours.

If you drop a class and it ultimately results in a credit on your student account, refund processing is every week after the first disbursement for fiancial aid for each part of term.

How quickly are changes to my schedule reflected in the list of materials to verify?

Students should see the changes in their Titan First Day Ready course materials list to verify within 24 hours of adding or dropping a course. Check your Titan student email for updates and remember, the link to verify course materials and select the delivery preference is only active at select times each term.

Where can I find how many credit hours I'm registered for?

You can view your course schedule in the myEFSC Portal, which will list the credit hours for each course. Remember the program only applies to credit-hour courses and not to Career and Technical clock-hour programs or to non-credit continuing education courses.

Opting Out or Back In

Can I opt-out of the program and how do I opt out?

While Titan First Day Ready provides convenient and affordable access to all required course materials, students have the option to opt-out of this program each semester. This option will be available to all students prior to the beginning of each major term (fall, spring, and summer).

The opt-out period for each term normally opens on the Monday of the same week that fees are due for the term (the fee due date will be on a Thursday that same week). The fee due date and the Add/Drop deadline for each term can be found on the Academic Calendar.

For Summer Term 2024, the Titan First Day Ready Opt In and Out period using the online system is:

Your decision to participate or opt out of Titan First Day Ready using the online opt-out system is for the entire semester, including any part-of-term sessions also on your schedule that start later.

OPT OUT: Titan First Day Ready

If you decide to opt back in during a term's opt in or out period, follow the instructions in the question below about changing your status.

Students who opt-out will need to obtain their required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes, and digital materials. If a student elects to opt-out of Titan First Day Ready, it is their responsibility to review and confirm the title and ISBN number for all course materials purchased outside of the program. Students can find this information about their required course materials on the Bookstore website.

If I am only taking courses in a shorter part of term and not any full term courses, can I opt out and how?

The process for how you opt out of Titan First Day Ready if you are ONLY taking short-term courses depends on when you register for those classes.

If you register for the courses before or during the term's online opt-out period, then you can use the online system to opt out.

For Summer Term 2024, the Titan First Day Ready Opt In and Out period using the online system is:

If you have registered for the short-term courses after that online opt-out access ends, then you can contact the bookstore directly and they will assist you with opting out.

OPT OUT: Titan First Day Ready

Students who opt-out will need to obtain their required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes, and digital materials. If a student elects to opt-out of Titan First Day Ready, it is their responsibility to review and confirm the title and ISBN number for all course materials purchased outside of the program. Students can find this information about their required course materials on the Bookstore website.

I intend to opt out and would like to request a temporary credit to my student account for the Titan First Day Ready charges that are listed. How can I do this?

It's important to know that following the process below to request a temporary credit is NOT a substitute for opting out of Titan First Day Ready through the online system or by contacting the bookstore if it's for a later part-of-term course. You must follow-through and actually opt out following the process and timeframe explained in questions above.

A completed FDR Notification of Intent to Opt Out form can be filled out to request an immediate temporary credit for the Titan First Day Ready charges on your account. The completed form must be emailed as an attachment to studentaccounts@easternflorida.edu.

The form indicates you intend to opt-out using the online system when it's available or will contact the bookstore if it's a later term course and that you will complete that process before the opt-out period deadline to avoid the charges being reversed back to your outstanding account balance.

Remember: Submitting the Notification of Intent to Opt-Out form is NOT a substitute for opting out through the online system or by contacting the bookstore if it's for a later part-of-term course.

Can I opt-out if I picked up my textbooks?

Yes, you will have 48 hours to return your textbooks and officially opt out. (The 48-hour period is calculated based on days when the Bookstores are open). If you do not return the textbooks, the charges for the bundle will remain on your student account.

Can I select which courses I opt-out of?

No, if you choose to opt out of the program for a given semester, you are opting out of all of your courses for that semester.

How do I change my opt-out status?

To change your status and opt into the Titan First Day Ready program, please follow the link found in your opt-out confirmation email or visit this link which is only active through the end of a term's Add/Drop period.

Materials-Related

Can I buy my rented textbook?

Yes, the program provides you with the option to purchase textbooks at a reduced rate during the return period.

Can I mark up the inside of my book with a highlighter or make notes in the margins?

Yes, normal use of highlighting and writing is permitted in your rental materials. Missing pages, water damage, a broken spine, or excessive writing or highlighting in the book are considered not acceptable.

When are my textbook rentals due back to the bookstore?

The deadline to return all rental textbooks is the last day of finals for the semester. Students will receive email reminders ahead of the rental deadline.

Do I need to return books if they are for a continuation course?

Yes, you will still be required to return continuation course textbooks. You will be issued the same title for the next semester of the continuation course.

If physical materials are not returned to the Bookstore by the return deadline what happens?

Barnes and Noble will send reminder emails to the student's Titan email account leading up to the rental return period and will monitor the return of books and keep the College apprised. If books are not returned there will be a hold placed on the student's EFSC account until the books are returned.

What if I drop or add a class?

If you have already received your materials before you dropped the course, you may simply return the book to the EFSC Bookstore within 48 hours. (The 48-hour period is calculated based on days when the Bookstores are open). If you drop a class and enroll in a different class, the bookstore will “swap” the required textbooks or access codes to ensure that you have what you need for your current course schedule.

If a course is added, you will receive an email to your Titan student email instructing you to confirm your schedule change and select your delivery preference (in-store pick up or shipped directly to you). The email will be from: notification@materials.bncollege.com. An email notification will be sent when your order is ready of pick up or when it ships.

If you drop a class, return the materials by the deadline, and it ultimately results in a credit on your student account, refund processing is every week after the first disbursement for fiancial aid for each part of term.

If a student registers for classes in multiple parts of a term, such as a shorter session or minimester, how will this impact the delivery of course materials?

Students who register at one time for classes in multiple parts of term can pick up all physical textbooks at the same time, unless a course in a shorter term is added later.

Digital materials for shorter terms that begin after the full term start date will be available in the Canvas LMS when the shorter term class starts.

How does the EFSC Bookstore know what materials are required for each course?

The EFSC Bookstore works directly with the faculty who submit their required course materials for the courses they are facilitating.

Financial Aid Impact

If I receive Financial Aid, can it pay for my Titan First Day Ready Course Materials costs?

Yes, financial aid is first applied toward all charges on your EFSC student account bill, including fees for Titan First Day Ready. If your financial aid exceeds your EFSC billing charges, you will be eligible for a refund.

Students who receive Veterans Educational Benefits should consult with the staff at EFSC's Military and Veterans Service Center to discuss how the Titan First Day Ready program impacts their aid package.

What is the impact of opting out if I receive Federal Financial Aid? Can I still use aid for course materials?

Students have the option to opt-out of Titan First Day Ready and purchase their course materials outside of the program.

Students whose authorized financial aid exceeds their tuition and fees are eligible for a book voucher to purchase materials and supplies at the EFSC Bookstore. See more about the Book Voucher process.

Does EFSC still offer Book Vouchers?

Yes, the Book Voucher program is still in place. Students with authorized financial aid exceeding their book charges will be eligible for a book voucher to purchase materials and supplies regardless of whether they participate in Titan First Day Ready or opt out.

Faculty-Focused FAQs

How do I integrate First Day Ready into my Canvas course if the integration does not happen automatically?

Please refer to the Titan First Day Ready Guide for Instructors that will arrive via email from the Campus Bookstore. The guide may include references to First Day Complete because this is Barnes and Noble's official name for the program.

How does cross-listing or merging course sections impact First Day Ready?

If a course is cross-listed or merged and delivering digital materials in Canvas, the bookstore will be made aware by EFSC's IT team. That will allow the materials to sync with the Titan First Day Ready link, in a course, or through a publisher's integration in Canvas (ex. McGraw-Hill, Connect, Cengage, Pearson, etc.).

Can faculty opt their courses out of the program?

No.

Students are given the opportunity to review their individual course materials and opt-out of the program every semester. All credit-hour courses at EFSC are part of Titan First Day Ready and faculty do not have the ability to opt their courses out of the program. 

How is the Titan First Day Ready program different from the prior First Day Access program?

The First Day Access program that was in effect at EFSC through Summer Term 2023 featured materials access for only select courses and students could opt out or in for each individual course.

Titan First Day Ready applies to ALL of the courses a student has registered for during a term, and if a student opts out of the program they will have opted out for every course — and will have sacrificed the 35% to 50% cost savings on materials plus be responsible for purchasing all required course materials on their own. Will the credit hour charge affect the lab fee that students pay?

No, the credit hour charge does not affect any lab fees. It is a separate charge and does not replace any other tuition or fees.
