Getting Started with AI

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content in response to a user's prompt. It can produce text, images, audio, video, and computer code by recognizing patterns in large amounts of data. Generative AI can help students brainstorm ideas, explain concepts, summarize information, solve problems, and support learning. While it is a powerful tool, its responses should always be reviewed for accuracy and used responsibly.

AI Basics: How AI Works

Artificial intelligence identifies patterns in information, uses those patterns to make predictions, and creates new content based on what it has learned.

In simple terms, AI does not think, reason, or understand the world the way people do. Instead, it analyzes data, identifies patterns, predicts likely outcomes, and generates responses based on the information it has learned.

Data Privacy and Security

When using AI tools, it is important to protect your personal information and the privacy of others. Avoid entering sensitive or confidential information into public AI platforms, including student identification numbers, passwords, financial information, medical records, or personal details about yourself or others. Remember that information shared with some AI tools may be stored or used to improve future AI models. Before uploading assignments, class materials, or research documents, be sure you have permission to do so and follow your instructor's expectations. Taking a few simple precautions can help protect your privacy, maintain academic integrity, and ensure AI is used safely and responsibly.

Academic Integrity

Artificial intelligence can be a valuable learning tool, but it should always be used in accordance with your instructor's expectations and the College's academic integrity policies. Before using AI in a course, carefully review your course syllabus and assignment instructions to understand your instructor's guidelines. If you are unsure whether AI is allowed, ask your instructor before using it. Following course expectations helps ensure your work reflects your own learning and maintains academic honesty.

AI tools can generate text, images, audio, and other content in seconds, but that does not mean the content is free to use without consideration. Materials created by others, including books, articles, artwork, music, and videos, may be protected by copyright. When using AI to support your coursework, always respect intellectual property rights, cite sources when required, and avoid presenting someone else's work as your own. If you use AI-generated content in an assignment, follow your instructor's guidance and applicable citation standards. Understanding copyright helps you use AI responsibly while respecting the work and creativity of others.
Evaluating AI Responses
AI tools can provide helpful information, but their responses are not always accurate, complete, or free from bias. Before relying on AI-generated content, take time to evaluate the information carefully. Consider whether the response answers your question, includes sufficient detail, and is supported by credible evidence. Look for signs of outdated information, missing context, or unsupported claims. Using critical thinking when reviewing AI responses helps ensure you are learning from reliable and trustworthy information.
Fact-Checking Information
AI can sometimes generate incorrect or fabricated information that appears convincing. Always verify important facts, statistics, quotations, citations, and references by consulting reliable sources such as textbooks, scholarly articles, library databases, government websites, or other reputable organizations. Fact-checking AI-generated content helps you avoid spreading misinformation and ensures your academic work is accurate, credible, and well supported.
