Getting Started with AI
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content in response to a user's prompt. It can produce text, images, audio, video, and computer code by recognizing patterns in large amounts of data. Generative AI can help students brainstorm ideas, explain concepts, summarize information, solve problems, and support learning. While it is a powerful tool, its responses should always be reviewed for accuracy and used responsibly.
AI Basics: How AI Works
Artificial intelligence identifies patterns in information, uses those patterns to make predictions, and creates new content based on what it has learned.
- AI learns by analyzing large amounts of data to recognize relationships and patterns. Similar to how people improve through study and experience, AI improves by processing examples rather than through personal understanding.
- AI predicts by applying those learned patterns to respond to questions, make recommendations, or estimate the most likely next step or answer.
- AI generates by producing new content—such as text, images, code, audio, or other media—based on the information and patterns it has been trained to recognize.
In simple terms, AI does not think, reason, or understand the world the way people do. Instead, it analyzes data, identifies patterns, predicts likely outcomes, and generates responses based on the information it has learned.

Responsible AI Use
When using AI tools, it is important to protect your personal information and the privacy of others. Avoid entering sensitive or confidential information into public AI platforms, including student identification numbers, passwords, financial information, medical records, or personal details about yourself or others. Remember that information shared with some AI tools may be stored or used to improve future AI models. Before uploading assignments, class materials, or research documents, be sure you have permission to do so and follow your instructor's expectations. Taking a few simple precautions can help protect your privacy, maintain academic integrity, and ensure AI is used safely and responsibly.
Artificial intelligence can be a valuable learning tool, but it should always be used in accordance with your instructor's expectations and the College's academic integrity policies. Before using AI in a course, carefully review your course syllabus and assignment instructions to understand your instructor's guidelines. If you are unsure whether AI is allowed, ask your instructor before using it. Following course expectations helps ensure your work reflects your own learning and maintains academic honesty.
