Program Propels Future Law Enforcement Officers

Future leaders for state law enforcement agencies recently gained invaluable training during a prestigious program at Eastern Florida State College’s Public Safety Institute that prepared them for top command positions.

Some 33 officers graduated Dec. 5 from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Florida Leadership Academy, which selects the state’s best professionals and requires them to complete four months of rigorous coursework.

The program included officers from 25 agencies throughout Florida, including the Melbourne, West Melbourne, Palm Bay, Rockledge, Satellite Beach and Fellsmere police departments along the Space Coast.

“The academy trains the men and women who will become the leaders in law enforcement and corrections throughout Florida,” said Marian Shelpman, Dean of EFSC’s Public Safety Institute. “They’re nominated by their chiefs and command staffs and have demonstrated high standards of character and integrity during their careers. We were honored to host them here at Eastern Florida.”

Among those attending the graduation ceremony was Dean Register, director of FDLE’s Criminal Justice Professional Division. Representatives from the Florida Department of Corrections and Seminole County Sheriff’s Office were also on hand.
