Fall Cultural Arts Showcase Brings Free Family Fun to King Center

September 9, 2013

The Brevard Symphony Orchestra, Eau Gallie Arts District and the King Center for the Performing Arts have teamed up for a new family event featuring an afternoon of music, theater, dance and visual arts, with a taste of the new food truck trend included as well.

The Inaugural Fall Cultural Arts Showcase is scheduled for Sun., Sept. 22 from noon to 6 p.m. at the King Center on the Eastern Florida State College Melbourne campus. It will include special performances throughout the day from arts groups that include the Cooca Village Playhouse and the Space Coast Ballet.

The Brevard Symphony Orchestra connects with younger audiences several times a year, such as through the free family concerts on Sept. 22 and with special concert field trips during the school year.

The Brevard Symphony Orchestra will perform during two free family concerts at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. as the Orchestra combines its annual free concert tradition with this new arts event.

“This is the Orchestra’s 60th anniversary year and we want to recognize everyone who’s made the past 60 years possible and all the local arts groups play into that so we’ve been looking for ways to show collaboration and this event is the ultimate collaboration,” said Fran Delisle, Executive Director of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra.

“All the music we're playing is recognizable and comfortable for a family audience. We're trying to show everyone that symphony concerts are approachable.”

Both concerts will include the popular themes from the “Star Wars” movies and costumed characters from the popular films will be in attendance and available for photos.

The Food Truck Bazaar featuring traveling food vendors from the Orlando area will kick off the day’s celebration under the pine trees west of the King Center parking lot. Food trucks will sell food starting at noon and patrons are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for a fun-filled, tailgating atmosphere.

Inside the King Center Rotunda dozens of Brevard’s arts groups will hand out information and showcase the area’s theater and dance groups, visual arts organizations and museums.

“We will also have what we call a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo with all kinds of instruments that we want parents to let their children touch,” said Delisle. “Our Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra members will be there helping children play the instruments. I’ve had parents come back and tell me their child wanted to start flute or trumpet lessons after this.”
