BCC Golf Team Captures NJCAA District Title

April 16, 2013

Brevard Community College's golf team won its fourth NJCAA Division I District 4 title in the last 11 seasons and its first since 2008 on Tuesday in Pendleton, S.C.

BCC shot 291 to finish with a 54-hole total of 861, easily outscoring second-place Central Alabama, which shot 293 to finish at 877. Wallace State of Alabama finished third at 880.

"It was super, absolutely super," BCC head coach Jamie Howell said of the victory. "The players worked their tails off all year. The last two months they embraced what we worked on. It was a terrific week for them."

The victory gives BCC momentum as it heads into the May 14-17 NJCAA Division I national tournament at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. The appearance will be BCC's 11th in Howell's 11 years at the helm and BCC's 44th in the tournament's 54-year history.

BCC has won seven national golf championships.

"There is still a lot of work to do," Howell said of preparing for nationals.

Individually for BCC, sophomore Blake Biggs shot 70 on Tuesday to finish at 209, one stroke behind medalist Chris Atchley of Wallace State who shot 71 to finish at 208.

"Blake played a good round," Howell said. "He did what he was supposed to do."

Biggs' classmates Anthony Skirk shot 72 on Tuesday to finish at 216, good for fifth place, and Keith Greene shot 76 to finish at 218. Freshmen Arthur Leonard shot 73 also for 218 and Kyle Benson carded 77 for 237.

Also on Tuesday Howell was named district coach of the year and Biggs and Leonard were named to the all-district team, which makes them eligible for All-American honors that will be bestowed at the national tournament.

"It was a pleasant surprise, I didn't see that coming," Howell said of his honor.

A total of eight teams from the 13 in the district — the largest in the nation — advance to the national tournament.
