Multiple Honoree: In addition to this new statewide honor, BCC student Michael McAllister received a scholarship from local business leader Bernie Simpkins last fall after writing a winning essay that outlined McAllister's goal to own his own dental practice.

McAllister earned the statewide honor for his work in pursuing an Associate in Arts degree with a concentration in science. In addition to attending classes, he also works part-time and has logged more than 175 volunteer hours at the Health First Palm Bay Hospital.

McAllister is also involved in campus events and was selected to attend the Inaugural Student Leadership Institute in Phoenix, AZ, held by the President’s Roundtable. His goal is to become a dentist and open an office in Brevard County.

Last fall, McAllister was honored as the recipient of the Bernie W. Simpkins Entrepreneurship Scholarship that provides $1,000 over an academic year based on an essay he submitted.

“I have no reservations that Michael will complete his mission and become a beacon of hope for others who may believe they are limited by their economic and environmental challenges,” said LeRoy Darby, Associate Provost of the BCC’s Palm Bay Campus.

In choosing him for the statewide honor, FCS Chancellor Randall Hanna congratulated McAllister, saying “your leadership encompasses our vision for students and makes you a shining example of success in our schools. Through your involvement and service to your community, I have no doubt that you will be part of those who have realized the American dream.”
