City of Cocoa Beach Fire Department Honored for Donation of Heavy Rescue Truck

October 22, 2026
The City of Cocoa Beach Fire Department has donated a 1997 Freightliner Heavy Rescue Truck to Eastern Florida State College's Public Safety Institute, with the presentation recognized during the October meeting of the EFSC Board of Trustees.
The specialized vehicle is designed to support comprehensive and advanced Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and special operations training within the EFSC Fire Academy. The truck will enhance students' ability to respond to both natural and man-made emergencies while also supporting advanced training opportunities offered throughout the year to municipal, county, and volunteer firefighters.
The addition of this specialized apparatus will help the EFSC fire training faculty and instructors provide realistic, hands-on scenarios that mirror the challenges firefighters can expect to encounter throughout their careers.
"This truck holds special meaning for me because it was the first heavy rescue vehicle I worked on as a member of the fire rescue team," said City of Cocoa Beach Fire Chief Justin Grimes. "Knowing that it will continue serving a purpose by helping train the next generation of firefighters is incredibly rewarding. While its emergency response days may be behind it, it's exciting to see the truck begin a new chapter, helping students gain the hands-on experience they'll need to protect and serve their communities."
Rising costs and extended service life expectations for fire apparatus have led many municipal and county departments to retain vehicles longer, making surplus training equipment increasingly difficult to obtain.
The limited availability of used fire vehicles has created challenges for training
centers nationwide seeking the equipment necessary to provide high-quality, comprehensive
instruction to both recruits and veteran firefighters, making the City of Cocoa Beach's
donation all the more significant.
"The donation of this heavy rescue truck is an extraordinary investment in the future of public safety," said EFSC President Dr. Jim Richey. "Providing our students with access to the same specialized equipment they will encounter in the field strengthens the real-world training experience that is at the heart of our Fire Academy.
We are grateful to the City of Cocoa Beach Fire Department for its generosity and commitment to helping prepare the next generation of firefighters to serve our citizens and visitors in Cocoa Beach and throughout the Space Coast.”
Eastern Florida State College's Firefighter Training program has twice been recognized as one of Florida's premier fire service training programs and continues to set the standard for exceptional recruit preparation and professional development.
