New EFSC Scholarship Established in Honor of Former Professor and Student

February 18, 2013 - A new scholarship has been established by Marian Dionne, with contributions from friends and family, at the Eastern Florida State College Foundation, Inc. to honor the lives and accomplishments of her husband, Guy Hinman, and son, Dan Hughes.

The Guy Hinman and Dan Hughes Memorial Endowed Scholarship will fund scholarships to support Brevard County residents with a financial need who are attending EFSC in pursuit of an Associate in Arts degree with the intent to continue on to a four-year school to major in Math or Math Education.

Both Guy Hinman and Dan Hughes had close ties to the College.

Guy was a resident of Brevard County and a math professor on the Melbourne campus of Eastern Florida State College for 26 years. He was passionate about education and pursued many hobbies, including pottery, building wood strip canoes, growing bonsai trees, traveling and collecting books and fossils.

Dan was a 2001 graduate of Melbourne High School. He attended EFSC on a music scholarship while pursuing his degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. Dan was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society at EFSC. He loved music, cooking and traveling with his family.

Michele Murrell, EFSC Foundation Executive Director, lauded the scholarship donors.

“The Foundation is honored to work with donors like Marian Dionne who establish scholarships in honor of a family member,” Murrell said. “A named scholarship is a fitting way to remember loved ones who've passed away, like Guy and Dan, by helping students afford a college education.”

The Eastern Florida State College Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides financial resources to enhance programs and services at EFSC.
