Balda Family Foundation Committed to EFSC Foundation Scholarship Program

January 30, 2013 - The mission of the Balda Family Foundation is to motivate, inspire and educate academically promising, at-risk and underserved youth in Brevard County. Since 2008, the Balda Family Foundation has donated funding to the Eastern Florida State College Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides financial resources to students and to enhance programs and services at EFSC.

This funding has been directed toward providing scholarships primarily focusing on EFSC’s emergency services, firefighting and engineering programs. Additional funding provides assistance to students pursuing an Associate’s degree at EFSC.

Recipients of the 2011-12 Balda Family Foundation scholarships meet with members of the Balda family.

The Balda Family Foundation goes beyond just providing financial assistance, forming a connection with the students who are helped by its scholarship dollars.

"We want to get to know our scholarship recipients, foster a relationship with them, provide motivation and encouragement as they continue along their path of education, it's like being part of our extended family," said Sarah Balda.

In 2012, the Balda Family Foundation created a new scholarship through the Eastern Florida State College Foundation. The Balda Family Foundation Fire Academy and Emergency Services Scholarship provides awards to students with a financial need who are pursuing degrees or certificates in the Fire Academy, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Science Technology or Paramedic programs at EFSC.

“As a result of the generous donations provided by the Balda Family Foundation over the past three years, the EFSC Foundation has been able to award over $12,500 in scholarship awards to more than 30 deserving students,” said Michele Murrell, EFSC Foundation Executive Director.

“Most of the programs that the Balda Family Foundation supports are not eligible for financial aid, which means that students, who are usually already working full-time, have to take out student loans to take classes. We are extremely grateful for the support that has been provided by the Balda Family Foundation.”
