EFSC Creates Scholarship to Honor Service-Learning Leader

April 3, 2017 - The Eastern Florida State College Foundation is seeking donations to start the Roger Henry Service-Learning Scholarship to honor the educator’s work with students and the community.

Henry, who died in 2016, started the College’s Service-Learning program in 1988 and was a national leader in the field, which allows students to earn credit for volunteer work with civic organizations.

As a result of his efforts, Eastern Florida’s program is recognized as among the best in the nation and has been named to the White House’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll nine straight years.

Some 4,200 students participated last year, contributing 190,000 hours of community service with 350 partner organizations and agencies in Brevard County.

In all, more than 80,000 students have devoted about 3 million hours of community service since Henry began the program, reflecting the College’s deep ties to the Space Coast it serves.

“Roger was an inspiring leader who showed students they can make an important difference in the world by getting involved,” said EFSC Foundation Director Jennie Kriete.

“The scholarship is a great way to continue his legacy, with donations providing students the financial help they need to reach their educational goals.”
