Titans Hosting Youth Golf Camp

April 13, 2016 - Eastern Florida State College will once again be offering the P.J. Wilson and Henry Scott Youth Golf Camp.

Golf CampThe 24th annual event will be held June 13-23 at the Fred Gay Golf Academy at Eastern Florida State College, 3570 SR 524, Cocoa, FL, 32926.

The free camp is for students ages 10-16 and begins at 9 a.m., June 13. It will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday through June 23.

The program teaches students the basic skills of golf including golf course etiquette, conduct and sportsmanship as well as well as values for successful living.

The camp is designed to help build the participants' self-confidence and provide guidance on setting goals and providing support in laying the foundation for positive life directions. Drinks and snacks will be provided at the camp. Students must wear tennis shoes or sneakers. No sandals or flip-flops are allowed.

The camp was begun in 1992 under the guidance of former Brevard Community College (now EFSC) President Dr. Maxwell King with assistance from Henry Scott and P.J. Wilson, two African American golf professionals in Brevard County.

For years it was known as the Minority Golf Camp because of its efforts to reach out to minorities, but it's always been open to all young people.

Wilson passed away in 2000 and Scott in 2002.

The camp continues with the support of EFSC President Dr. Jim Richey and Dr. Joe Lee Smith. Smith has been active with the camp since its inception and has volunteered countless hours assisting at the camp.

Don Williams was a key organizer of the camp during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Camp instructors this summer are Roosevelt Jackson, Isaac Johnson and EFSC head golf coach Jamie Howell.

Registration is mandatory and pre-registration is required by May 25.

The registration/orientation session is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 25 at the Ralph M. Williams Student Center, Building 11, Community Dining Room, on the Cocoa Campus, 1519 Clearlake Road. Refreshments will be provided.
