Service Learning Program Finalist for State Award

September 22, 2015 - EFSC's Center for Service-Learning is a finalist for a major state award that recognizes students' involvement in their community.

The Florida Campus Compact Engaged Campus of the Year Award is presented annually to colleges and universities in Florida that provide students with wide-ranging opportunities for civic engagement.

The 2015 finalists are Eastern Florida State College, Tallahassee Community College and the University of South Florida.

The winner will be announced during a Nov. 5 ceremony at Lynn University in Boca Raton.

Eastern Florida’s Service-Learning program has long been a national leader in taking students out of the classroom and into the community to broaden their educational experience and learn how to become good citizens.

Since it began in 1988, more than 76,000 students have served three million community service hours.

Last year alone, more than 4,500 students volunteered nearly 200,000 community service hours with 350 partner organizations.

Students who participate have the opportunity to earn the prestigious Citizen Scholar distinction if they perform 300 hours or more of work in the community.

Eastern Florida’s program has also been the recipient of the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll nine years in a row, an achievement that few colleges around the nation have matched.
