Former BCC Basketball Coach Passes Away

October 24, 2012 - Former Brevard Community College men's basketball coach Kirk Stewart, who led the College to two state championships, has passed away.

Stewart, 70, of Mims, who also coached at Titusville High and Astronaut High School and ran local basketball camps for years, succeeded Jim Oler and led BCC to four conference titles in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1983 and back-to-back state championships in 1979 and 1980.

During Stewart's tenure the basketball program was run from the Cocoa Campus.

Rockledge’s Bob Anderson, who was BCC’s athletic director during Stewart’s time as coach, remembers him well.

“He was one of the best organizers, the most knowledgeable coach of basketball that I ever worked with,” Anderson said. “You could depend on him. He managed the apartments where the players lived, he held the players in high esteem. He was like a father to many of those young men. He had winning records every year he was at BCC.

“He took a leave of absence to coach for two years in the United Arab Emirates. He was just the most wonderful guy to work with. He and his whole family. They were wonderful people. I can’t say enough about him.”

Stewart is survived by his wife Kay, daughters Cheryl and Wendy and three grandchildren.
