How to Apply for Veterans Educational Benefits

The Office of Veterans Educational Benefits strives for a smooth application process. Just remember that applying for veterans benefits is a different process than applying for admission to the college, so you'll need to do both.

Please follow these steps below by clicking each one to see the details of how to complete that step — steps can often be done at the same time. If you have any questions, contact or visit EFSC's Office of Veterans Educational Benefits for more information.

Visit the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website to submit your VONAPP or Veterans Online Application.

You can do this before or after you apply for admission to EFSC, but we recommend you do this first or as soon as possible because the VONAPP often takes a while to process. To submit your VONAPP:

  1. Go to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs “Apply Online (VONAPP)” website:
  2. Click on the VONAPP logo to launch VONAPP.
  3. Follow the directions until the end of the application process.
  4. If you are applying for Chapter 33 and you are eligible for Chapter 30, 1606 or 1607, you must opt out of one of these chapters you are eligible for in order to get Chapter 33 benefits.
  5. Submit your VONAPP and be sure to print a copy of the submitted application. Make sure you have a confirmation number at the bottom of the application.

Order your military transcript.

Army and Navy veterans can go to the websites below and print an unofficial copy of their transcript and turn it into Admissions. Coast Guard and Air Force veterans need to order an official copy to be sent directly to EFSC (Attention Admissions.)

  • Army – AARTS Transcript:
Go to the following website and print your personal army transcript:
  • Toll free 1-888-276-9472
  • Navy / Marine – Smart Transcript:

  • Air Force – CCAF:

    Credentials Toll free: 1-800-646-1858

Apply for admission to Eastern Florida State College.

Click here to visit our website’s Steps to Enrollment section, organized by whether you’re a new EFSC student or returning or transferring. Follow the college’s separate admission steps plus move on to Step 4.

Apply for any additional financial aid through EFSC's Office of Financial Aid.

Veterans are still eligible to apply for Financial Aid through the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We strongly encourage you to apply in the event that you need additional financial assistance while at EFSC. Applying for Financial Aid also can serve as a backup for payment at the college if your benefits are delayed. Visit EFSC’s financial aid website for full details.

Register for classes.

Registering for classes online is the easiest way to go. Links to the current Schedule of Classes for both Credit and Non-credit classes can be found under the Steps to Enrollment link on the left. You can also register for classes in-person at any campus Admissions/Records office

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR VETERANS IN A PSAV PROGRAM: Veteran or dependents of veterans using VA educational benefits for a PSAV certificate program cannot be certified for any online or hybrid courses. The VA requires all PSAV programs to be certified in clock hours so only in-classroom classes can be certified for VA educational benefits.

Gather necessary paperwork and come into EFSC’s Military and Veterans Service Center to register in our system.

Because individual GI Bill program requirements can be complicated, we like to help you in person and make sure you navigate the process smoothly. Paperwork to bring with you to an EFSC Military and Veterans Service Center should include:

  1. A copy of your EFSC class schedule.
  2. Your official or unofficial military transcript (if you haven’t already had it sent to EFSC).
  3. DD-Form 214 (Report of Military Separation/Discharge), part 4. You should have received this at the time of discharge or retirement.
  4. Printed VONAPP OR Certificate of Eligibility.
  5. Any additional forms required by the GI Benefit Program chapter you are applying for. See the GI Programs link in the left column for paperwork lists by chapter.

Forms can be downloaded from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website or picked up at a EFSC Military and Veterans Service Center, open Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 6 PM and located at:
