Eastern Florida Drops Four-Set Match to Palm Beach State
Oct. 8, 2013 - Eastern Florida State College's volleyball team dropped a tough four-set match to visiting Palm Beach State College on Tuesday.
Eastern Florida's 25-20, 28-30, 20-25, 23-25 defeat in the Melbourne Campus gym dropped its overall record to 9-18 and its Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference record to 1-4.
Palm Beach, which defeated Eastern Florida in five sets on Sept. 17 in Lake Worth, improved to 3-3 in conference and 6-14 overall.
The match was closely and emotionally played, especially at the net, with neither team holding more than a six-point lead at any time. Eastern Florida held that margin six times in the second set – the latest being 20-14 - and led from 5-4 until Palm Beach State tied it at 23-23. The lead then changed hands five times until the visitors broke a 28-28 tie with the final two points to capture the set.
The final two sets also were air tight with the biggest lead being Palm Beach's 10-5 advantage in the third. Eastern Florida rallied for a 16-15 lead but could not key Palm Beach at bay.
The biggest lead in the fourth and final set was three points by Palm Beach.
Next up for Eastern Florida is a trip to Fort Pierce to play St. Johns River State College at 3 p.m. Saturday. Beyond that Eastern Florida has but two home appearances remaining, its final conference home date against first-place and nationally 11th-ranked Miami Dade on Oct. 15 and an Oct. 29 Sophomore Night match against Polk State College. Admission to Eastern Florida home matches is free.
