Daytona State Sweeps Eastern Florida in Volleyball
Sept. 3, 2013 - Daytona State College avenged an early-season five-set volleyball loss to Eastern Florida State College, sweeping the host Titans in three sets on Tuesday in the Melbourne Campus gym.
Eastern Florida, despite playing its first home match of the season, and before a large, enthusiastic crowd, never established itself, losing 25-21, 25-11 and 25-15. Eastern Florida led for only one point in the entire match, 2-1 in the second set and the match was only tied four times, 1-1 and 2-2 in the first set and 1-1 and 2-2 in the second.
Other than that it was all Daytona State, disappointing Titans head coach Herb Tokumoto.
"Our competition is strong, there is nobody in our region that is weak," he said. "You've got to come every night and play ball, pure and simple.
"We need to play our game and that's not what we did. It was evident by how we played and the way we did not play. Sometimes you have to look at heart. Whether we had heart all the way through? Heart comes when you're down and you fight back. Honestly I think that's something we have to work on.
"I know they've got it. Why they didn't show it, that's a question we are going to ask. We're going to find out."
The loss dropped the Titans to 3-3. Daytona State improved to 7-3. Eastern Florida next plays at noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday, hosting Webber International's junior varsity and Florida State College Jacksonville in a tri-match on the Melbourne Campus. Admission is free.
