Miami Dade Defeats BCC in Four Sets in Volleyball

October 9, 2012 - Brevard Community College's volleyball team took unbeaten Miami Dade College to four sets on Tuesday night but in the end did not have enough for the powerful visitors, falling 12-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 20-25 on the Melbourne Campus.

BCC fell to 3-21 overall and 0-7 in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference. Miami Dade improved to 7-0 in conference and 10-4 overall.

Next up for BCC is a trip to Palatka to play St. Johns River Community College at 5 p.m. on Friday. Its next home match on the new wood floor, which was inaugurated on Tuesday, is 7 p.m. Oct. 16 against conference foe Indian River State.

Tuesday's triumph by Miami Dade marked the second time this season it defeated BCC in four sets. BCC head coach Herb Tokumoto took the loss in stride.

"Honestly they did come to play," he said of his team. "Just those few mental errors. When the games are as close as two points just one or two (errors) creates the loss. The mental focus is probably the hardest thing we work on every day.

"To get them to understand, and they see how tight these matches are and how competitive they are, hopefully it will make them realize it's 90 percent mental."

Heading down the home stretch of what has been a disappointing season Tokumoto is stressing several points with his young team.

"Mostly for them to stay healthy and talking about whether they truly realize the level at which they have to be to play this game at our college level," he said.

"It's a constant, steady level of competition."

BCC's final home match of the season is 7 p.m. Oct. 25 against Polk State.
