Valiant BCC Loses in Five Sets to Broward

September 27, 2012 - Sometimes numbers just don't add up. Heart and guts complete the equation instead.

Missing three starters due to injury and down 2-0 in sets to visiting Broward College, the Brevard Community College volleyball team fought valiantly Tuesday night on the Titusville Campus.

But in the end BCC fell in five sets in a Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference match, 12-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21 and 10-15.

BCC dropped to 0-6 in the conference and 3-14 overall. Broward improved to 3-3 in conference and 4-6 overall in defeating BCC for the second time this season.

BCC showed particular gumption in the fourth set, rallying from a 6-1 deficit to even the match that began resembling a runaway and instead turned into one of riveting rallies and shifting tides of emotion.

It was a marked turnaround from Tuesday night when BCC surrendered a 2-0 lead in sets to fall to visiting conference foe Palm Beach State in five sets.

"The girls played their hearts out," BCC head coach Herb Tokumoto said. "You've just got to look at down three starters, three impact starters. The team pulled together and did an outstanding job.

"Some of the girls have not seen a lot of court time. So for them this is an outstanding showing. Hopefully we can get it more together and they can hang onto it a lot longer."

Next up for BCC is the South Florida Community College tournament in Highlands this weekend. BCC plays an 11 a.m. match against Clearwater Christian and a 3 p.m. match against Pasco Hernando Community College on Friday and an 11 a.m. match against Lake Sumter Community College and a 1 p.m. match against Gulf Coast State College on Saturday.
