Eastern Florida Tennis Plays St. Petersburg in Spotlight on Friday
Feb. 20, 2014 - A powerful St. Petersburg College team and a big stage await Eastern Florida's nascent women's tennis team on Friday.
Eastern Florida and St. Petersburg meet at 11 a.m. in Delray Beach as part of The Delray Beach Open by The Venetian® Las Vegas men's pro tennis (ATP 250 tour) event.
St. Petersburg has beaten NJCAA Region 8 foes Florida State College Jacksonville 9-0, State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota 8-1 and Hillsborough Community College 6-3 en route to a 3-0 record, winning 23 matches and losing four.
Eastern Florida is 1-1 having beaten FSCJ 6-3 but falling 9-0 to Hillsborough on Sunday.
Acknowledging Sunday's result and what lies ahead, Eastern Florida head coach Chuck Jacobs has been stressing consistency and finishing off the points.
"The team knows that they are much better than the effort that was given on Sunday," Jacobs said. "We worked very hard on our doubles and net play all week.
"We will line up for this match the same as we did for our last two matches. The only change that we look for is that we get a stronger start in doubles so that we are not in such a big hole going into singles play."
Jacobs believes his players are taking the same approach.
"I think they are just seeing it as another match right now," he said. "I don't think it will really sink in until they walk through the gates and are practicing along side guys like John Isner (world No. 10) or the Bryan brothers (world No. 1 doubles). Our plan is to get there early so we can adjust and then the ladies will be settled down enough to focus on the task at hand."
