Eastern Florida Tennis Travels to Tampa for Second Match

Feb. 12, 2014 - Fresh off a victory in its inaugural spring season match Eastern Florida State's women's tennis team travels to Tampa for a Sunday meeting with Hillsborough Community College.

The NJCAA Region 8/Florida college System Activities Association match begins at 12 p.m. at the Dale Mabry Campus.

Eastern Florida defeated region and conference foe Florida State College Jacksonville 6-3 on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Jimmy Moore tennis courts in Melbourne.

FSCJ spotted Eastern Florida a 2-0 lead since it brought only five players. Six comprise a team. Eastern Florida won the two doubles matches for a 4-0 lead as the No. 1 team of freshman Isabella Sella and sophomore captain Kaila Cochran defeated Bailey Palmer and Olivia Rolle 8-1 and the No. 2 team of sophomore Kasey Love and freshman Hope Fellows beat Alexa Brandalik and Samantha Powell 8-4.

Eastern Florida built a 5-0 advantage for the victory when Cochran, playing No. 3 singles, defeated Ragan Palmer 6-3, 6-3 in singles.

Also winning in singles for Eastern Florida was Sella who defeated Bailey Palmer 6-2, 1-6, (10-8) at No. 2.

In the wake of the debut head coach Chuck Jacobs has been stressing conditioning and mental toughness in anticipation of the challenging matches ahead.

"One take away that we learned from the last match is we are going to have to be more consistent in our match play," Jacobs said. "We can't just come out and win one set and think that the match is over. The focus over the next several practices will be on finishing our matches at the highest level with little to no let downs in our game play.

"I believe the win was good for our team but we also know we were given two easy points. The team has challenged each other to be more aggressive and to have a more dominant presence on the court. I think this attitude will eventually bring our team much success in the upcoming matches."

Eastern Florida competes in Region 8 against Hillsborough, FSCJ, St. Petersburg College, Broward College and State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota. The April 11-12 conference tournament determines the top three finishing teams that advance to the NJCAA Division I national tournament at Tyler, TX.

Eastern Florida will get a taste of the big stage on Friday, Feb. 21 when it plays St. Petersburg at the Delray Beach Tennis Center as part of The Delray Beach Open by The Venetian® Las Vegas men's pro tennis (ATP 250 tour) event.

The teams play at 11 a.m. on Friday which is quarterfinal day for the men. For more information on the Delray Beach Open visit
