Eastern Florida Softball Splits Home-Opening Doubleheader

Feb. 4, 2014 - Eastern Florida's softball team opened its home season on the Palm Bay Campus on Tuesday by splitting a doubleheader with Seminole State College, losing 5-3 and winning 2-1.

Eastern Florida is now 3-1.

The Titans scored twice in the third inning of the second game putting together a double by Manya Lopez, an error, a Bri Seaman single, a Shelby Nazworth ground out and a Fallon McLaughlin single for a 2-0 lead.

The advantage held up until the top of the seventh. Seminole put runners at second and third with nobody out and plated a run on a sacrifice bunt. The visitors then tried another bunt but saw the potential tying run thrown out at the plate as Titans pitcher Dajia Jones scooped up the ball and made a perfect toss to catcher Nazworth who applied the tag for the second out.

Jones walked the next batter but then induced a ground out to end the game.

"I knew they were going to bunt, they were bunting all game," said Jones who went to 2-0 with the victory. "My body was already the right way so I just tossed it back, she made a perfect tag and we got the out."

Eastern Florida managed just five hits in the second game while allowing seven and committed two errors. But the defense that faltered in the first game came through in the second.

Seminole committed three errors in each game.

"We have to play a better defensive game, we gave the first game away," said Eastern Florida assistant coach Bob Yanczewski. "You can't give teams runs. They had four unearned runs. You're not going to beat anyone like that.

We just threw the ball away.

"We made a great play at the plate (in the second game) to come out of a second and third with no outs. Our pitching stepped up pretty big, our defense definitely did their job under the pressure and we won the game."

In the first game Eastern Florida managed just six hits and committed five errors. Titans pitcher Brooke Formby allowed 10 hits in taking the loss.

Formby went 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored while Devin Williams went 2-for-4 with a run. Kya Tucker had the other Titans hit.

Seminole built a 4-0 lead after 2 ½ innings. Eastern Florida rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Eastern Florida added a single run in the bottom of the fifth after Seminole plated one in the top of the fifth but the Titans could get no closer.

The Titans return to action in Saturday's and Sunday's Triple Crown tournament in St. Augustine where they play Florida State College Jacksonville at 3:15 p.m. and Middle Georgia at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday and South Georgia State at 9 a.m. and Hillsborough Community College at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
