Eastern Florida Softball Qualifies for State Tournament as Palm Beach State Falls
April 21, 2014 - Next stop Pensacola.
Eastern Florida's softball team earned a spot in the state tournament for the 10th straight season on Monday as previously winless Broward College upset Palm Beach State. The Broward victory gave Eastern Florida third place in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference and the postseason spot that goes with it.
Eastern Florida finished the conference season with an 8-8 record and would have been tied for third with Palm Beach and faced a playoff had the Panthers swept Broward, which was 0-14 heading into the doubleheader.
But Broward beat Palm Beach 6-4 in the second game giving the Panthers a 7-9 conference record and Eastern Florida a tournament berth.
Miami Dade College and Indian River State College tied for first in the conference with 12-4 records and play Wednesday at Palm Beach State to determine the conference's top seed heading into the state tournament.
Eastern Florida finished the regular season at 22-25 overall. Palm Beach finished at 18-29 overall and Broward 2-39.
The state tournament is the first weekend in May in Pensacola.
