BCC Softball Drops State Tournament Opener, 2-1

May 3, 2013 - Brevard Community College's softball team lost its first game in Friday's opening round of the NJCAA District G/Region 8A/Florida College System Activities Association Atlantic District Tournament in Pensacola, falling 2-1 to Florida State College Jacksonville.

BCC fell into the loser's bracket and faced an 8 p.m. Eastern Time game against Seminole State College to stave off elimination.

The loss dropped BCC to 30-26 on the season. FSCJ, which moved into the winner's bracket, improved to 37-22.

FSCJ jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead on Friday and held it until BCC's Cassie Boggs drove in Nichole Mills in the top of the fifth inning for a 1-1 tie.

FSCJ won the game on a ground ball base hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Previous to the winning run, BCC shortstop Sarah Sinopoli threw an FSCJ runner out at home for the first out.

Brooke Formby was the losing pitcher for BCC, allowing eight hits. BCC collected six hits, three of them singles by Kat Ammons who went 3-for-4.

"It's always tough when you lose in the bottom of the seventh inning but it was a well-played game," BCC assistant coach Bob Yanczewski said.
