BCC Softball Splits Doubleheader with Seminole State

January 31, 2013 - Brevard Community College's softball team split a doubleheader in its home opener on the Palm Bay Campus on Thursday, defeating Seminole State College 7-5 in the first game and losing 10-0 in a mercy-rule shortened five-inning game in the nightcap.

BCC fell to 2-4. Seminole improved to 3-2.

Seminole took an 8-0 lead in the third inning of the second game on five walks, two hits and a costly BCC error. It added two more in the fifth for the final margin.

BCC managed only three hits in the second game while surrendering six hits and seven walks. Sophomore Jami Cordell was the losing pitcher for BCC.

"We've got to get better defensively," BCC assistant coach Bob Yanczewski said after the second game. "And our pitching has to get better, too many walks. We've got to get more consistent. If we're not going to be consistent we're going to get results like this.

"Once we get consistent enough we'll play good ball and we'll be good."

Sophomore Shannen Marchu pitched out of several jams to get the win in the first game. BCC's hitters also provided plenty of support as they banged out 10 hits.

Marchu had two singles as did sophomore Kat Ammons and freshman Bri Seaman.

BCC hitters also walked six times including four times in the bottom of the fifth when the Titans plated the two runs that provided the winning margin.

Seminole did not go quietly, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. The rally was snuffed out when leftfielder Seaman threw out a Seminole runner at second base for the final out just after two runs scored.

Seminole had 12 hits.

Next up for BCC is the Saturday-Sunday Triple Crown College Classic tournament in St. Augustine. BCC plays Tallahassee Community College at 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Petersburg College at 3 p.m. and Aiken (S.C.) Technical College at 5.

On Sunday BCC plays Hillsborough Community College at 9 a.m. and Florida State College Jacksonville at 1.

BCC's scheduled home doubleheader on the Palm Bay Campus at 5 p.m. Tuesday against South Florida Community College has been changed to an away doubleheader at Avon Park.
