Eastern Florida's Women's Soccer Team Closes Regular Season With 3-2 Victory
Oct. 18, 2013 - Eastern Florida State College's women's soccer team concluded its regular season on Friday with a 3-2 victory over Broward College in Pembroke Pines.
The seventh straight victory improved the Titans record to 10-2-1. Their next game is the NJCAA District H championship match Nov. 9 in Mississippi against an opponent to be determined. The winner advances to the NJCAA Division I Women's National Championship Tournament that will be contested Nov. 18-23 on the Melbourne Campus.
The Titans advanced to the national title game last season, finishing as runner-up. In 2011 the Titans lost in the district title match.
Sophomore Jenci Villaverde provided the offense for Eastern Florida on Friday scoring three goals to propel the Titans to a 3-0 lead. However Broward scored on a set piece and a penalty kick in the last minute for the final margin.
The goals were only the second and third that sophomore Katelyn Kern has allowed all season in sharing time with classmate Amy Clason-Messina. Kern did not have any saves on Friday. Clason-Messina had one.
"We took them for granted," Eastern Florida head coach Jeff Carr said of Broward which the Titans have beaten three times this season.
"We were not focusing on the task at hand."
Eastern Florida played Region 8 foes Broward and Polk State College – against which it also had a perfect record - three times each to determine the Region 8 champion and the postseason berth.
Villaverde's goals gave her the team lead with 12. She also notched four assists for a team-best 28 points. Classmate Nikki Mitchell finished with 10 goals and three assists for 23 points.
Assists on Friday went to Samantha Solis, Melissa Williams and Kimmie Tierney.
