Women's Soccer Opens Season With 10-0 Victory
Aug. 23, 2013 - Eastern Florida State College's nationally second-ranked women's soccer team opened its season on Friday with a 10-0 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, MS.
Eastern Florida led 4-0 at halftime.
The Titans return to action at 2 p.m. Eastern on Saturday against 2012 NJCAA District H foe Pearl River Community College in Perkinston. Eastern Florida (then Brevard Community College) defeated Pearl River 4-0 in November to advance to the NJCAA Division I national championship tournament where it finished as runner-up.
On Friday Eastern Florida got three goals from sophomore forward Nikki Mitchell, two from sophomore Jenci Villaverde and two from sophomore Amanda Lodge. Sophomore Sarah Compton scored once as did freshmen Devin McAllister and Jamie Perriello.
Mitchell recorded three assists and freshman Samantha Solis two. Lodge, McAllister and Perriello contributed an assist apiece.
Eastern Florida had 23 shots to none for Mississippi Gulf Coast. Sophomores Amy Clason-Messina and Katelyn Kern shared goalkeeping duties for Eastern Florida.
"I was pleased with our effort today," Eastern Florida head coach Jeff Carr said. "We have lots of things we need to work on to get better but for the first game it was a good result. Everyone contributed."
