Women's Soccer Team Gathers to Celebrate Season

May 2, 2013 - Brevard Community College's women's soccer team celebrated its landmark 2012 season on Wednesday with a dinner and awards ceremony.

Head coach and Athletic Director Jeff Carr presented awards selected by the team and the coaching staff and also read letters he wrote to each departing sophomore.

Receiving team-selected awards were: Erin Davis and Chelsea Seng, hustle award; Katlyn Bales, most improved; Jess Fassnidge and Heather Williams, defensive award; Lois Edvardsson, leadership award; Sue Kumaning, most valuable player.

Receiving coaches awards were Edvardsson and Courtney Hueston, most valuable players.

Carr also recognized Edvardsson, Hueston and freshman Heather Williams for being All-American selections. Edvardsson and Williams were National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first-team honorees. Hueston was a first-team NJCAA Division I selection and Edvardsson a second-team pick.

BCC finished the season, its third as a program, with a 16-2 record and as the NJCAA Division I Women's National Soccer Tournament runner-up, losing to Paradise Valley Community College in the title game.

BCC also spent several weeks of the regular season ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation in the NJCAA Division I poll.

Players graduating are co-captain and career scoring leading scorer Edvardsson, co-captain Morgan Taylor Smith, Julia Kantor, Hueston, Seng, Davis, Catherine Hassell, Gabriela Jaimes, and Shelby Savolainen.

The captain for the 2013 season is rising sophomore Kumaning. BCC opens its season on Aug. 23 against Mississippi Gulf Coast in Perkinston, MS and plays its first regular-season home game on its new on-campus field on Aug. 29 against St. Louis Community College.

BCC will host the NJCAA Division I Women's National Tournament on campus through 2016.
