Another Tough Road Test Awaits BCC Women

September 12, 2012 - It's another weekend and another game against a high-profile opponent on the road for the Brevard Community College women's soccer team.

This time it's nationally ranked and 2011 NJCAA Division I national championship runner-up Darton College in Albany, Ga. Saturday at 3 p.m. Last weekend BCC, 2-1, beat host and nationally ranked Butler Community College, 2-1 in overtime but lost 4-1 to defending national champion Tyler Junior College, also in Kansas.

Darton was 2-3 heading into Friday evening's home game against Gordon College. It opened the season with a 1-0 home loss to South Georgia College and a 2-1 defeat at Polk State College. It defeated Georgia Military College 6-0 and Andrew College 12-0 before falling 1-0 at home to Georgia Perimeter College.

While the Butler, Tyler and Darton matches have and will garner much attention, two games next week — Tuesday at Polk and Friday at Broward College — are key to Brevard's postseason ambitions.

The games are the first of six among the three foes in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference that will determine which one advances to the NJCAA Division I regional playoffs, the first step toward the Nov. 11-17 national tournament at Melbourne Central Catholic.

That being said, BCC isn't looking ahead. After all it was a defeat to Darton in the NJCAA Districts that prevented BCC from advancing to the national tournament.

"We take them one at a time," head coach Jeff Carr said.

Sophomore forward Lois Edvardsson is BCC's leading scorer with three goals. Sophomore Courtney Hueston has two goals while sophomore Morgan Taylor Smith and freshman Sue Kumaning have one each.

Freshman goalkeeper Julia Kantor has seven saves so far this season.
