EFSC Men's Soccer Loses 2014 Opener
Aug. 22, 2014, Pensacola - Following his team’s 2-1 season-opening loss to Northeast Texas Community College Friday at the University of West Florida, Eastern Florida State College soccer coach Oliver Twelvetrees was calm and philosophical.
“It’s not how you start the season, it’s how you finish it that counts,” he said.
Despite the loss, the Titans dominated a game in which defensive errors led to both goals and an inability to finish its chances hurt. EFSC had 22 shots to NTCC’s 9.
“We dominated possession,” Twelvetrees said. “We just couldn’t put it in the net.”
The Eagles’ Yannick Koffi opened scoring in the 11th minute and the Texans grabbed a second in the 54th, when Jake Winship netted on a corner kick.
Try as they might, the Titans could not pull one back until the 75th minute, when Justin Gavin converted a cross from fellow sophomore Romario Grant.
The squad goes into tomorrow’s match at 4 p.m. against Hinds Community College with the mission of improving defensively and making its chances count. That match will also take place on the road in Pensacola.
“We gave up two goals, so we need to tighten up, defensively,” Twelvetrees said. “And it certainly was surprising to see our (finishing) as it was. We were not very clinical. We took 22 shots and only six were on target, so we will work on that.”
