National Championship Tournament Kicks Off With Banquet

November 11, 2012 - The 2012 NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Championship Tournament officially opened Sunday night with a Recognition Banquet at Brevard Community College's Melbourne Campus gym.

Players from 12 colleges – 252 in all – including tournament host and No. 1 seed BCC attended with coaches, college officials, family and friends on the eve of the first games scheduled for Monday at Melbourne Central Catholic.

Attendees were welcomed by BCC President Dr. Jim Richey; Rusty Buchanan, chairman of Space Coast Sports Promotions; BCC Athletic Director, head women's soccer coach and tournament director Jeff Carr; and Brian Beck, NJCAA assistance executive director, compliance.

"Twelve teams are here to decide the championship and with it the ultimate reward for the players, coaches and their families who have given so much to the sport," Dr. Richey said.

Buchanan spoke to the tournament itself which he called "a true national championship."

BCC, 13-1 and ranked No. 1 in the nation by the NJCAA, kicks things off at 9 a.m. Monday against 12th seed Muskegon Community College of Michigan, 8-4-1.

Games follow at 11:30 a.m. matching No. 2 seed Paradise Valley Community College of Phoenix, AZ (19-0-1) against No. 11 seed Louisburg, N.C. (13-6); at 2 p.m. matching No. 10 seed College of Lake County, IL, (16-1-1) against No. 3 seed Iowa Western Community College (17-1-1) and at 4:30 p.m. matching No. 4 Butler Community College of Kansas (22-2) against No. 9 St. Louis Community College (16-3-1).

Pool play continues at 9 and 11:30 a.m. and 2 and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday is a scheduled off day. The four pool winners advance to Friday's 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. semifinals. The championship game is at 6 p.m. Saturday.

All games will be played at Melbourne Central Catholic, 100 E. Florida Ave., Melbourne, FL, 32901.

Admission prices for tournament games are: Daily passes: Adult, $10, student, $7; tournament passes: Adult, $25, student, $15. Children 5 and under will be admitted for free.

Games will be webcast at and on NJCAATV at
