Aug. 1, 2014 - Eastern Florida State College's fall athletics season got under way on Friday as women's soccer and volleyball held their first practices in the Melbourne Campus gym.

Soccer, aiming for its third straight appearance in the NJCAA Women's Division I National Championship Tournament, got things started with a 6:30 a.m. conditioning and agility session.

Head coach Jeff Carr greeted the team with a message.

"We talked about staying hungry and humble," Carr said. "Getting better each and every practice.

"It's all about the team being family on and off the field. The time is now to get better each and every minute as a player and as a person."

The Titans open their fifth season as a program on Sept. 5 as they host Spring Hill College's junior varsity on the Melbourne Campus' state-of-the-art facility.

The women finished last season with a 12-3-1 record, losing in the first round of the national tournament held on the Melbourne Campus. Eastern Florida hosts the national tournament through 2016.

Volleyball under new head coach Andrea Rasmussen held its first practice at 10 a.m. The Titans open their season on Aug. 23 at Lake-Sumter State College in Leesburg.

Volleyball finished last season at 13-23. To that end Rasmussen stressed fundamentals, consistency and intensity.

"Every ball, every touch, every time," she told her team.

Men's soccer under head coach Oliver Twelvetrees opens practice on Monday as it seeks to meet expectations created by it qualifying for the national tournament in its inaugural season in 2013. The men finished at 14-1-3.

Tennis under new head coach Wally Norwich and golf under 13-year head coach Jamie Howell open practice on Aug. 18, the first day of classes. Tennis and golf play non-championship seasons in the fall.
