Gembecki, Madera Eastern Florida Student-Athletes of the Week

Taylor Gembecki

Oct. 7, 2013 - Volleyball player Taylor Gembecki and men's soccer player Jorge Madera are Eastern Florida State College's Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 6.

Gembecki, a sophomore setter from Riverdale High in Fort Myers, FL, finished last week with 41 assists, six kills, 14 digs and two blocks as Eastern Florida went 2-2.

"Taylor has been the spark plug for this team," said Eastern Florida head coach Herb Tokumoto. "She is consistently working for her team to give her hitters the best ball for them to get the kill. Taylor works hard on the court every moment. She does whatever it takes to get her team to the finish."

Eastern Florida is 9-17, having exceeded its win total of eight from 2012.

Madera, a freshman goalkeeper from Sanger High in Sanger, CA, made five saves in a 2-2 double overtime tie with nationally ranked Darton College on Friday night including two in the waning minutes of the first overtime.

"Jorge played his heart out as always," Eastern Florida head coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. "He was at full stretch on the second save getting just the tips of his fingers on the ball to turn it around the post and keep us in the game."

Eastern Florida is 7-1-1 in its inaugural season, has qualified for the postseason and is ranked seventh nationally by the NJCAA and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
