Gembecki, Roosen Eastern Florida Student-Athletes of Month for October
Oct. 31, 2013 - Volleyball player Taylor Gembecki and men's soccer player Arturo Roosen are the Eastern Florida State College Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Month respectively for October.
Gembecki, a sophomore setter from Fort Myers, FL and Riverdale High, was a first-team Florida College System Activities Association All-Southern Conference selection. Also, after 35 matches she was ranked in the NJCAA Division I top 50 nationally in two categories: 46th in assists with 709 and 49th in service aces with 39. She led the team in matches played with 32 and was second in sets played at 109.
"Taylor's attitude on the court is one of a true competitor, she plays to win and will settle for nothing less," said Eastern Florida head coach Herb Tokumoto. "Seeing her on the court is such a pleasure, to see the skills and the technique she has developed. Taylor has come a long way and has brought her true enjoyment of the sport to the court, always working on the court for the benefit of the team."
Roosen, a freshman defender from Winter Park, FL and Lake Howell High, scored two goals, including the winner with five minutes remaining, in Eastern Florida's 4-3 NJCAA Region 17 tournament play-in game victory over Middle Georgia on Wednesday.
"Arturo has started every game in our 11-game unbeaten streak," said Eastern Florida head coach Oliver Twelvetrees whose team is 11-1-1 and plays in the region semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday at Darton College in Albany, GA. "He is a great student and an example to all of us of what a true student-athlete is."
