Six BCC Student-Athletes Receive NJCAA Academic Recognition

June 10, 2013 - Six Brevard Community College student-athletes are included on the list of 2012-2013 NJCAA Division I Academic Student-Athlete Awards winners.

They are: Matt Harris, baseball, 3.95 GPA, Superior Academic Achievement; Lois Edvardsson, women's soccer, 3.9 GPA, Superior Academic Achievement; Anthony Skirk, golf, 3.84 GPA, Superior Academic Achievement; Kayla Sullivan, volleyball, 3.78 GPA, Exemplary Academic Achievement; Morgan Taylor Smith, women's soccer, 3.66 GPA, Exemplary Academic Achievement; Shante Stevenson, women's basketball, 3.6 GPA, Exemplary Academic Achievement.

All six have graduated and three have accepted athletic scholarships at four-year institutions: Edvardsson at Clayton State in Morrow, GA; Harris at St. John's University in Queens, NY; and Smith at Florida Tech in Melbourne, FL.

"What an accomplishment for these outstanding student athletes," BCC Athletic Director and women's soccer head coach Jeff Carr said. "It is a credit to the hard work in the classroom that allows them to excel and achieve these great honors.

"I want to commend them for representing the Titan Nation on and off the field with academic excellence. I look forward to seeing them succeed at the next level in the classroom and on the field."

The NJCAA has more than 525 member schools. Students who have completed three semesters or accumulated 45 total hours were eligible for recognition. More than 1,680 NJCAA student-athletes met the requirements for individual honors. Nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA for the 2012-2013 academic year on more than 3,500 teams in 28 sports.

The award categories are Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence (4.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale); Award for Superior Academic Achievement (3.80 to 3.99 on a 4.00 scale) and Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement (3.60 to 3.79 on a 4.00 scale).
