January 28, 2013 - Basketball players Gary Gaskins and Jordan Smith are the Brevard Community College Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Jan. 27.

Gaskins, a 6-foot, 10-inch sophomore center from Orlando, FL, was honored for the second consecutive week. Not only did Gaskins block eight shots in Saturday's 70-68 victory over conference foe Broward College he also stole the ball with 1.7 seconds remaining in the game and sank a vital free throw for the final margin.

Gaskins now has 21 blocks in his last three games for BCC which is 19-4 overall and 5-0 in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference. Gaskins ranks fifth in the nation among NJCAA Division I teams averaging 3.2 blocks per game.

Smith, a 6-2 freshman guard from Palmetto, FL, scored a career-high 29 points in BCC's 69-52 defeat of conference foe Indian River State College including seven-of-10 from the three-point line.

Smith is shooting 49.2 percent from the three-point line.

The recognition for both players resonated with BCC head coach Jeremy Shulman.

"Gary Gaskins has truly bought into our defensive principles, and has been the nation's most dominant defensive player as of late," Shulman said. "I am excited for Gary to earn this award.

"I also am so proud of Jordan Smith. He is such a talented player, and has gone through the growing pains of being a freshman in college basketball. He has really turned it on during conference play. JD has been outstanding for us, and is very deserving of the award."
