Two Eastern Florida Golfers Compete in Florida State Amateur Championship

June 24, 2014 - Two golfers who will make their intercollegiate debuts for Eastern Florida State College this fall competed in the 97th Florida State Amateur Championship at Quail Valley Golf Club and Hawks Nest Golf Club in Vero Beach last weekend.

Michael "Mickey" DeMorat of Merritt Island led after the first round with a nine-under par 63 that tied the Quail Valley course record. He finished with rounds of 78, 75 and 74 for a 72-hole total of 290, tying him for 15th place.

Kerry Sweeney of Melbourne finished tied for 33rd after rounds of 71, 73, 74, 78 for a total of 296.

Sweeney competed for Melbourne's Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in high school. DeMorat, who was home schooled, competed for Merritt Island High.

The tournament drew a field of 168 golfers.
