National Tournament Journal: Wednesday's Rally Lifts Spirits
May 15, 2014 - Eastern Florida sophomore golfer Nick Maynard of Austin, TX is providing a daily journal from the team's appearance at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament. Here in his entry for Day 5.
Today (Wednesday) was the second round of the 2014 National Tournament at Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa. Due to our poor performance during the first round of the tournament, it was vital for us to shoot a solid second round to get us back into contention. The conditions were eerily similar to the first round, cold temperatures with the wind blowing strongly from the north. Drew Cooke led us off at 11:20 a.m., with Arthur Leonard bringing us in going off the first tee at noon.
The team performed well today, resembling Titan golf significantly better than the first round scores. Brad Gray fired the best round of the day for our team, a 73, followed closely by Drew Cooke, 74, Nick Maynard, 75, Kyle Benson 76 and Arthur Leonard 77. The team score of 298 jumped us 10 spots forward in the standings and into the top 10.
Coach Jamie Howell was pleased with the comeback but only took a moment to soak in the better round. We stayed after the round for a solid hour and a half to work on our game in preparation for Thursday's third round. Today we needed a solid comeback round to get us back into the top 10 and we did just that. Thursday's round will require quality Titan golf such as today to get us even closer to our goal of being on top.
The spirit of the team was greatly improved today compared to after the first round; we look forward to improving our scores each day of the tournament.
