Titans Tied for Fourth After First Day of District Golf Tournament
April 14, 2014 - Eastern Florida's defending NJCAA District 4 golf champions finished the first day of the 2014 tournament eight strokes off the lead on Monday in Albany, GA.
Eastern Florida finished the 36-hole first round tied for fourth at 597. Wallace State of Alabama leads at 589. The top six teams at the conclusion of Tuesday's final 18-hole round advance to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament, a trip Eastern Florida has made for the last 11 seasons.
Playing at the Stonebridge Country Club where they won the District 4 Preview in October, the Titans found a 180-degree difference in the course.
"In the fall the course was wet and lush, today it was fast and bouncy," said Titans head coach Jamie Howell.
"We had trouble in the morning round with the bounce and the roll in the fairways and on the greens. In the afternoon we had a better handle on it."
Darton State College sits second at 590; defending national champion Central Alabama Community College third at 591; Eastern Florida and Cape Fear are tied for fourth at 597 and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is sixth at 603.
Individually for Eastern Florida Arthur Leonard carded 73-73-146;
Nick Maynard 80-71-151; Kyle Benson 77-75-152; Drew Cooke 79-73-152 and Brad Gray 76-77-153.
Play is scheduled to resume at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday but expected strong storms overnight could delay the final round until later in the day.
