Eastern Florida Ready to Defend District Golf Tournament Title
April 10, 2014 - Heading into the NJCAA Division I District 4 postseason tournament as the defending champion Eastern Florida head golf coach Jamie Howell is confident.
The 54-hole tournament tees off on Monday in Albany, GA where the Titans have won in their last two in-season tournament appearances, last fall and in March.
The district tournament serves as the qualifier for the NJCAA Division I national tournament in May, a trip the Titans have made for 11 consecutive seasons. And this year's team certainly doesn't want to be the one to end the run.
"It would be my observation we have not even considered not going to nationals," Howell said of the nationally sixth-ranked Titans. "At this time of year the guys must take ownership of the team and push each other. They expect it from the coaches but there is an element of pride in pushing your fellow teammates."
Eastern Florida will be represented at district by sophomores Arthur Leonard, Nick Maynard and Kyle Benson and freshmen Brad Gray and Drew Cooke.
Everyone is aware of the expectations and the method to meet them.
"Fewer mistakes and unforced errors and good play will take care of the outcome," Howell said.
Howell expects the main competition to be defending national champion Central Alabama, Faulkner State, host Darton State, and Wallace State. Other teams in the district are Cape Fear Community College of North Carolina, Abraham Baldwin College of Georgia, USC-Lancaster, Wake Tech of North Carolina and Meridian Community College of Mississippi.
The Titans finished the spring tournament season with a victory, three fourth-place finishes and an 11th-place finish. They also defeated NCAA Division I St. Peter's University in a dual match.
They have won the district tournament four times in the last 11 seasons, the most recent before 2013 coming in 2008.
