Golf Tied for Second After Tournament's First Day
Feb. 15, 2014 - Eastern Florida's golf team finished Saturday's first round of the Faulkner Community College tournament in Fairhope, AL tied for second place, five shots off the lead.
Playing on the 6,920-yard, par 72 Rock Creek Golf Club, Eastern Florida shot 304 for 18 holes to tie Wallace State Community College of Alabama. Host Faulkner State grabbed the lead at 299.
Individually Wallace State's Connor Brown set the pace with a 70 while Eastern Florida's Arthur Leonard and Nick Maynard carded 73 each. Brad Gary shot 78, Kyle Benson 80 and Dalton Bartlett 84 for Eastern Florida.
"It was a tough golf course in tough conditions," Eastern Florida head coach Jamie Howell said. "Temperatures started out in low 40s with 10-15 mph winds on an undulating course with severe slopes in greens.
"On a good day this course plays hard. We played reasonably most of the day but had to count six double bogies that hurt our opening round score. If we keep away from the big numbers on Sunday and take advantage of the par 5s we will be in good shape.
"Both Maynard and Leonard played very well. Gray hung in there and a decent round got away from Benson. Faulkner State will be tough on their home course but we can catch them with some good play."
