Titans Winter Invitational Opens EFSC Golf Season
Jan. 28, 2014 - Thirteen colleges and 15 teams will compete in the season-opening Titans Winter Invitational hosted by Eastern Florida State College's golf team at Suntree Country Club on Monday and Tuesday Feb. 3-4.
Entered along with Eastern Florida are Andrew College of Georgia; defending NJCAA Division I national champion Central Alabama Community College; Darton State College of Georgia; Embry Riddle Aeronautical University of Daytona Beach, FL; Faulkner State Community College of Alabama; two teams from Melbourne's NCAA Division II Florida Tech; NCAA Division II Lynn University of Boca Raton, FL; NAIA Southeastern University of Lakeland, FL; NCAA Division II University of Tampa; University of South Carolina-Lancaster Community College; Wallace State Community College of Alabama; and two teams from NAIA Webber International University of Babson Park, FL.
Florida Tech won last year's Titans Winter Invitational, denying Brevard Community College (now Eastern Florida) a fourth straight victory.
Eastern Florida head coach Jamie Howell enters this year's tournament with two goals.
"The goal is to win," Howell said. "At the same time I make sure we are prepared to play and compete."
"A good start gets the guys off to a positive start for the spring. If we struggle we need to reflect on what we did in preparation and determine if we just executed poorly or need to make any adjustments."
As for the pressures of performing in their own tournament, Howell hopes they won't be a distraction.
"Of course there are expectations from within, but again, if I can keep the guys looking forward and staying in the present then the distractions of expectation won't get in the way.
"The course (Suntree) will be hard and fast after the past few weeks of cold weather," Howell added. "Patience will be necessary to deal with the speed of the greens and tight lies in the fairways."
Representing Eastern Florida as a team will be Arthur Leonard, Brad Gray, Nick Maynard, Drew Cooke and Kyle Benson. Dalton Bartlett and Lorenzo Bolivar will play as individuals.
Spectators are welcome.
