Eastern Florida, Florida Tech Golfers Square Off This Weekend
Oct. 30, 2013 - Eastern Florida State College's golf team closes its fall season with two high-profile tournaments: this weekend's Collegiate Players Cup against crosstown Florida Tech and the Nov. 11-12 gathering hosted by defending national champion Central Alabama.
Eastern Florida and NCAA Division II Florida Tech face off beginning at 1:30 p.m. over three days – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – at Suntree Country Club in a match play format. Spectators are welcome.
Friday will feature four ball or best ball between partners counting for the score on each hole. Saturday will be foursomes alternating shots between partners. Sunday will be singles competition.
Eastern Florida head coach Jamie Howell's goal for the Florida Tech matchup is simple: win the cup back.
Looking ahead to the Central Alabama tournament Howell expects a challenging two days.
"Central Alabama's event will be a tough task as they tend to play very well on their home course," Howell said. "There is potential for a number of scenarios playing out at their event. Our guys know how good they are and now we know how good we can be. If we can play like we did in Georgia last week (winning the Darton Fall Invitational/District Preview) it will be very interesting to see how the event plays out."
Eastern Florida is then off until practice begins in January for the spring championship season.
"We'll take a look at what we did well and what can be done to improve those areas that will make us a more complete team at every event on our spring schedule," Howell said. "I'll tell the players to make sure they take some time away during the holidays to rest up as our spring schedule is busy."
Eastern Florida qualified for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament for the 11th consecutive season last spring and finished fifth.
